TMJ (TMD) Therapy in Whitby Ontario

The temporomandibular joint connects your skull, upper and lower jaw. You use the TMJ when speaking, chewing, or yawning. It can exert a great deal of force, allowing you to bite down hard.  When the TMJ joint is impaired, commonly referred to as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, certain problems can develop. Dentists are still trying to determine the exact cause of TMD but it is believed that it occurs when the TMJ becomes injured in some way. Possible causes include:

-An injury to the area, such as from blow or accident.
-Bruxism, which occurs when you grind or clench your teeth while asleep
-Some believe Arthritis may affect the joint
-Stress is also believed to be one of the causes

Although TMD can impact anyone, studies suggest that women could be more likely to have the condition. Adults between 20 to 40 years of age are most likely to have TMD.

TMD symptoms can include impairment of jaw movement, even the jaw locking. You may hear popping or click sounds when chewing, have frequent headaches or pain in the jaw, neck, or shoulders.TMD also results in poor quality sleep, daytime fatigue and in some cases ringing or hearing impairment.

Because TMD’s symptoms are usually varied, we will need to examine your jaw and teeth to check how to best address it. We will recommend the best treatment based on your dental and medical history. After we have determined the root cause of your TMD pain, we can plan a comprehensive treatment.

Treatment of TMD may include dental appliances like a stabilization splint, which keeps your mouth relaxed and teeth protected in case of grinding.
