Orthodontics & Orthopedics in Whitby Ontario

Despite the best of oral habits, even from early childhood, some of the most common issues we treat are misalignment and overcrowding. These can make it harder to brush and floss properly, increasing the chances plaque buildup and gum disease. Crooked or misaligned teeth can place stress on nearby teeth and cause problems with eating, breathing and can also lead to pain in the jaw if you bite is misaligned.

Your dentist may recommend an orthodontic treatment to correct any of these problems. To determine if an orthodontic treatment is appropriate for you, you should visit our office for an evaluation. Dr. Daniel Pesin will use modern tools and techniques to determine the issues and best solutions for you, making sure we fix issues that would only be more complex and expensive later on.

Some of the common issues that orthodontic treatments corrects include:

Overbites - When the upper teeth extend past the lower teeth.

Underbites - When the lower teeth extends past the upper teeth.

Open Bites - When the upper and lower teeth fail to make contact when biting down.

Overcrowding - When there isn’t enough space to accommodate your teeth.

Gaps - when the spaces between teeth are large.

Orthopaedics is usually employed as a first step to correcting dental problems, ideally at an early age. Orthopaedics may mean removable oral devices like retainers, space maintainers and jaw repositioning appliances like splints to promote optimal tooth, jawbone and facial development. Orthopaedics aim to correct development issues before they become more complex and harder to treat.

Orthodontic treatments, in comparison, employs braces and other permanent and semi-permanent appliances that correct alignment and spaces. Traditional braces, for example, are bonded to your teeth. They give more accuracy and control to move your teeth into place than removable appliances - with the exception of invisible braces. Regular adjustments with these type of appliances are required to check for issues and progress.
